Taking Careful Steps to Manage Fragility Fractures: A 2011 Update, Background and Risk Assessment

Based on the 2010 clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in Canada, which focuses on the prevention of fragility fractures, this education module presents an updated review of the impact of fragility fractures and examines the use of risk factor assessment tools to assess patients' 10-year risk of a major osteoporotic fracture.

  1. Discuss the impact of fragility fractures secondary to osteoporosis on health and quality of life.
  2. Define osteoporosis and the pathophysiology that increases risk for fragility fracture.

  4. Identify and modify patient circumstances that increase risk for fragility fractures.
  5. Refer patients for bone mineral density testing based on current Canadian guideline assessment standards.

Taking Careful Steps to Manage Fragility Fractures: A 2011 Update, Guidelines for Prevention and Management

Healthcare providers, particularly in long-term care settings, play a critical role in the prevention and management of fragility fractures secondary to osteoporosis. Based on the 2010 clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in Canada, this program outlines prevention strategies, lifestyle modification measures, ongoing patient assessment and pharmacotherapy according to patient circumstances.

After completion of this continuing education program participants will be better able to:

  1. Discuss fall prevention strategies.
  2. Educate patients about lifestyle measures which reduce risk for osteoporosis.
  3. Recommend appropriate intake of calcium and vitamin D from all sources.
  4. Discuss benefits and risks associated with the pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis.
  5. Discuss current evidence regarding risks associated with bisphosphonate treatment and supplemental calcium, which have recently received media attention.
